From ZooBeat and a look on the Toronto.ca site:

-Possible Madagascar exhibit

-Snub-nosed monkey exhibit

-Facelift for the rest of the African pavilion (including new exhibit for the Royal python, chameleon, Mandrills, Pygmy Hippo, free-flight aviary)

There's probably other stuff, too!

Old Zoo Maps [18 Oct 2007|07:20pm]

Zoo maps from recent years have been a blight on the conscience of our society. The Imperial Oil Siberian Tiger? Shoot me.

Is anyone sitting on a stash of old maps?

1994 or earlier would be, well, awesome.

Had a terrific zoo visit the other day and took tons of pics :) Got to see both Tigga's kids (one of which kept putting it's paws up against the glass) and Tatiana's as well, and the baby wild horses. The weather was perfect, couldn't've asked for a better day.

pictures galoreCollapse )

New polar bear comes to Cochrane
Cochrane habitat now the only place in Ontario to see polar bears

Michael Peeling
Local News - Tuesday, August 28, 2007 Updated @ 3:30:27 PM

A fourth member has joined the polar bear family in Cochrane.

Bisitek, a 27-year-old female, has moved from the Toronto Zoo to the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat and Heritage Village to retire.

Director of conservation Patricia Morin said it will likely be around two weeks before "Bisi" is ready to join Nanook, Aurora and Nakita and meet the public.

The Toronto Zoo has closed its polar bear habitat for renovations that will be finished in late 2009.

See Wednesday's edition of The Daily Press for the full story.

this is a video of Coda, the snow leopard at The Toronto Zoo. His zoo keeper was at the exhibit, and had just fed him, so he was feeling rather playful - which opted for an extremely cute video :)

Just found this. Sounds pretty impressive. I like the part of it possibly running all year, and the bit about it going through animal exhibits. "Therefor must be equipped with easily operable rails/doors to prevent passengers from disembarking while in motion." Bummer, I was hoping to they'd let folks go out and pet the tigers ;)

Went to the zoo today! [13 Jun 2007|12:43am]

Er, yesterday :P

I had a awesome time. We got to bypass the busy part of the day (the place was dead quiet). We got there at about 3:30. The animals were really active, and displayed some behaviors I haven't seen before in person.

The dhole was so close, you could almost touch her . . . If you didn't mind missing a hand ;) The lions were especially active, thanks to a raccoon sneaking into their enclosure and along the edge of their exhibit. Nokonda (the white lioness) was the first cat to investigate, then her sons came over to see what she was getting excited about. On the other side of the exhibit, ol' Rowdy just chose to sit back and chill out.

The cheetahs were outstanding. Mama and babies were out and were very cooperative and stayed around to be admired. The Japanese Macaques left the zoo, and the Barbary Apes got to have their exhibit, as well as their current one. I saw them really well, too, which is unusual in my experience -- the buggers keep hiding away from me. Saw some interesting interactions within the group and watched them for a while as they grazed the grass.

Last but not least, I took some pictures!

Confirmation! [12 Jun 2007|02:10pm]

Hi Angelicque,
We think she has given birth to two cubs.  As to when they might be on display it could be a while (several months) as Animal Care has to be certain that they are healthy enough and that the mother won't be too nervous. We're very excited at these births as they are such rare animals.  When everything is ready we will send out a press release, so you will probably hear that way.

Hello! When I visited the zoo last Saturday, I had asked about the snow leopards being separated - and was told that the female had given birth! I am writing to inquire about how they - the mother, father and cubs - are doing, and when they might be on display. :)

Thank you for your time!

snow leopard cubs!!! [10 Jun 2007|10:44am]

[ mood | ecstatic ]

so my husband and i went to the zoo yesterday, and upon visiting my favorite exhibit, i was concerned to see the female snow leopard separated from her mate.
the male (Coda) was in the exhibit itself, and the female (Tigga) was locked away from him in the cage.
this concerns me because i know how much these two adore each other, i always see them grooming each other and snuggling.
my first thought was...maybe she's pregnant?

so i went to find a zoo keeper, who wasn't sure why either - and also figures that could be the only reason why they were separated: pregnancy!.
she told me to ask guest services on my way out if they knew what was going on. so i did. ;)
this really friendly girl paged the snow leopard's zoo keeper and asked why they were separated and if the female was in fact pregnant. he replied "she's not pregnant...anymore! she just gave birth!"

cue me and the girl jumping up and down and smiling and giggling happily :)

so yes...snow leopard cubs!!!!
as soon as i hear any official news i will let you all know :):):)

Recommended Digital Cameras for Zoo [10 Apr 2007|10:12pm]

ubdramadrew
I love going to the zoo, but I noticed at my last visit to the Toronto zoo I really wish I had a camera that had a great zoom in. I've seen a lot of nice photos on here. Can anyone recommend a high quality digital camera they use for close up pictures of animals, preferably under $200? Thanks!
